The Spice Girls announced last year that they were planning a
musical based on their life and music, with member Geri Halliwell
serving as producer. Now with the help of "Mamma Mia!" creator Judy
Cramer, the musical is moving further into development.
Cramer spoke with the UK's Daily Mail about her plans turn the "girl
power" story to the stage, saying Halliwell had approached her twice
but she had said she was too busy. "But it just hit me that it could
be a great idea. It's not just what they were, but what they've
become. It's about the impact they've had on social popular culture,"
Cramer said.
The show, tentatively titled "Viva Forever" after one of the group's
hits, could debut on the London stage within a few years, but has yet
to be written. "Viva Forever" will feature the Girls' songs but won't
be a tribute show. "And it would all be their music, like 'Who Do You
Think You Are,' 'Wannabe,' 'The Lady Is A Vamp,' and 'Mama.' But the
show has to be written first, before the songs can be incorporated,"
Cramer said.
The other group members Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm, Emma
Bunton, and Victoria Beckham are said to collaborating on the idea in
some degree as well. The group last reunited for their "Return of the
Spice Girls" tour in 2008.
