بعد فترة وجيزة من نفوق الاخطبوط الذي حظي بشهرة عالمية لتكهنه بنتائج مباريات في كأس العالم السابقة لكرة القدم يحاول الفيلم الصيني (اقتلوا الاخطبوط بولKill Octopus Paul) أن يفند الحقائق وراء نجاح الاخطبوط المنجم في تكهناته. ويدور الفيلم الذي أخرجته شياو جيانغ حول مجموعة من مشجعي كرة القدم الصينيين الذين سافروا الى جنوب افريقيا التي استضافت نهائيات كأس العالم 2010 لاكتشاف مؤامرة اتحاد دولي للمراهنة.
وأخذت الحبكة تتعقد وتتشابك مع اكتشاف المشاهدين أن أسطورة بول تم اختلاقها واستغلالها لصالح مخطط للتلاعب في نتائج المباريات وعصابة دولية للمراهنات.
وقالت شياو في بكين بعد عرض خاص للفيلم لوكالة رويترز "أحب كرة القدم حقا وأعشق كأس العالم. لكنني أعرف أن هناك الكثيرين الذين يراهنون في كأس العالم.
